Black Teacher Recess brings Black educators and former educators together to laugh, rest, connect, and enjoy community. From virtual game shows to outdoor gatherings, we make room for joy and time together.

Indoor Recess is a chance to close the other tabs, get comfortable, and enjoy being in community. Bring your favorite snack, invite a colleague, or come on your own; you don’t need to know anyone or be a trivia expert to join us.
Whether you’re still working in education or have moved into a new chapter, there’s a place for you here. We hope you leave feeling a little lighter, a little more connected, and glad you made time for yourself.

Sometimes recess means a little friendly competition. Sometimes it means fresh air, movement, or a moment to slow down. Every gathering offers a chance to step away from your routine and make room for yourself.

There’s more than one way to reset
Our gatherings include game shows, yoga, sound baths, rest spaces, and more. Some give us space to get moving. Others invite us to settle in. Laughter and connection run through it all.
Come on your own or with another Black educator or former educator. You don’t need to know anyone before you arrive.
You’re welcome to join in at your own pace. There’s no expectation to share your story or have something figured out. Let this be a time you get to enjoy.
Why We Make Space
So much of life in education involves being available to others. Black Teacher Recess makes room for Black educators to receive care, build friendships, and enjoy being in community.
We believe joy deserves a place on the calendar. So does rest. So does spending time with people who understand parts of your experience without needing the whole explanation.
And that invitation doesn’t end when you leave education. Whether you’re in a school, navigating a transition, or years into a different chapter, there’s still a place for you here.
